Cords have ruled the electronic world since the first technological device. But they’ve disappeared from almost every TV, computer mouse, phone, and so much more. The only thing that seemed to lack participating in the “cordless revolution” was headphones. The first pair of headphones “was created by Fundamentalist Mormon and engineer Nathaniel Baldwin on his kitchen table in 1910” (Source: Bright Hub). As seen to the right, they were used with long cords plugging into multiple ports in order to function properly.

Eventually, headphones lost their cords. During the 1960s and 70s, the first wireless headphones were created. These headphones received a signal through a transmitter like a radio. Some of them were Radio Headphones, with radios built in.
Fastfowarding to 2016, Apple launches their new wireless headphones which can be charged in a sleek case and paired to any Apple device with ease. With the release of this product, there was an automatic backlash by the social media community with people commenting on their style and look. To the public, they seemed like the normal Apple earbuds without cords.
The only thing that seemed to lack participating in the “cordless revolution” was headphones.
Two years go by. Slowly, the want for these Airpods begins to rise even with the seemingly steep price point of $238.00 on the Apple website. Why would someone want to buy these Airpods that were constantly being made fun of and seemed like they would always fall out?
I asked SAS Senior Hanna Pham for her input on the reason she bought Airpods. “I got Airpods as a Christmas gift from my parent and I never really went out to get them.” For Hanna, they were a gift that shouldn’t go to waste. But for others like Mr. Lawrence Shackelford, they were an absolute necessity even with the large chance of losing them. “I actually thought the Airpods looked a little bit ridiculous, but I liked how easily they could pair with my phone and how they charged right from the case. I even lost my first Airpods and went out the next day to get another pair.” For Mr. Shackelford, and many of student and faculty body at SAS, Airpods are a way of listening to music with ease, especially with over 90% of the SAS student body owning an Apple device to pair their potential Airpods. For some, Airpods can resemble wealth or the newest style, but if you want to enjoy quality music on quality earphones, Airpods are the way to go.
