Before the year even ended, many students have already started to throw away their math homework, procrastinate to the maximum level and binge-watch as many TV shows and movies they can fit in about 2 months.
Personally, I love the summer since it’s a great time to catch up on the sleep you had lost during the school year, hang out with friends at that boba shop you wanted to try out and even catching up on all the TV shows and movies you wanted to watch.
Since the summer holidays are upon us, I thought I would recommend some of my personal favourite TV shows that I’ve been able to watch–since summer can get boring if you don’t have activities lined up for you.
And sometimes just staying at home in a cold room to relieve you from the summer heat, eating popcorn and watching some great TV shows, would be considered a great summer (at least to me).
So, here are my Top 5 recommended TV shows that range from the genre of Crime to Comedy to even Reality Baking. Additionally, all the TV Shows I recommend can be found on Netflix, which makes these shows even more available to you.
1. Good Girls
Genre: Comedy & Crime Drama
Brief Description: An NBC TV Series — Good Girls, mainly focuses on three suburban mothers who are having a hard time trying to make ends meet. They are tired of having everything taken away from them and find themselves in desperate circumstances to which they stop playing it safe and decide to rob their local supermarket, only to discover that they’re in for more than they bargained.

Personal Note: This show has become one of my favorite TV series to watch since I have a big interest in Crime Drama. The genre of this show can be confusing since it is a mix of comedy and crime, but once you start watching the show you will understand how these two genres are mixed well together. I give this show 4 stars out of 5 because even though the show has very realistic actions, dialogues and events, there were cliche Crime Drama scenes that were present in the show and the storyline of the series can be very confusing if you aren’t paying your full attention to the show. Otherwise, I would recommend this show to anyone interested who has a strong love for Crime Drama.
2. Lunatics
Genre: Comedic Mockumentary
Brief Description: Lunatics — a Netflix mockumentary ten-part series written by and starring Chris Lilley, continues the mockumentary style of his previous work such as Summer Heights High. This series follows the peculiar lives of six different characters, all played by one actor — Chris Lilley. The characters are described as eccentric, misfits who march to their own beat and sometimes obscene in terms of their lifestyle and behavior.

Personal Note: This web mockumentary series is another genre that I have a personal liking towards, and I have seen Chris Lilley’s previous work which inclined me to check out his new project – Lunatics. Since all these characters are played by the same incredible actor, sometimes it got tiring to see the same face on six different characters which is why I give this show 4 stars out of 5. Also, watching and listening to six different stories can consume a lot of your energy since you are engaged in six characters throughout the whole series. Otherwise, I really enjoy the show in terms of how impressive Chris Lilley is as an actor when it comes to completely different characters where their humorous personalities don’t blend with each other.
3. Kim’s Convenience
Genre: Sitcom Comedy
Brief Description: Kim’s Convenience adapted from Ins Choi’s 2011 play also called Kim’s Convenience, is a CBC TV Series that tells us the funny and heartfelt stories of the Kim family — a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in Toronto. You see the Kim family interacting with their customers, family members and the world around them. This sitcom finds laughter in the trials of Mr. and Mrs. Kim running a literal ‘Mom and Pop’ shop while raising kids in a culture not quite of their own.

Personal Note: I give this show 5 stars out of 5 because the concept behind this series is personally incredible. I love how they are able to talk about an issue like immigration in a Sitcom Comedic way. Even though most of the time the TV Show is humorous and filled with life, there are hard reality moments where they talk about immigrant parents who struggle with finances and the culture clash between the parents and their children who live in completely different worlds. Also, the personalities of the characters are in such a wide range where you don’t see a nerdy Asian kid who is only obsessed with studying and getting good grades. Instead, you see the daughter who is passionate in photography and is learning how to live alone, the son who works in a car dealership and has a sour relationship with his father and many more in-depth non-stereotypical Asian characters, that are usually not portrayed in American media.
4. The Assassination of Gianni Versace
Genre: Crime Drama
Brief Description: The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is an FX true crime anthology series that explores America’s most notorious crimes and criminals. This nine-part series is centered around the murder of a well-known fashion designer, Gianni Versace, who was killed by Andrew Cunanan. It based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History.

Personal Note: Again, I love Crime Dramas and when I heard there was a crime series made upon the murder of Gianni Versace, I was very excited to watch this TV Show. But after watching it, I give this show 3 and 1/2 stars out of 5 because even though the plot of this series is surprisingly good, there was a lot of gruesome scenes that I felt uncomfortable watching. If you are someone who can’t handle large amounts of blood, I wouldn’t recommend this show. However, the story and narration that the show provides since the use of cinematography helps convey the storyline of Versace’s murder. But the gruesome scene is where I might not fully recommend this show to everyone, depending on your tolerance to seeing blood on screen.
5. Nailed It!
Genre: Reality-TV
Brief Description: Nailed It! — a Netflix original series is a bake-off competition in the style of reality television, where three amateur bakers compete to replicate complicated cakes and edible masterpieces in order to win a $10,000 cash prize and a “nailed it” trophy. It’s part reality contest, part hot mess. This series was inspired by the craze of people trying and failing to make elaborate cakes they found on the Internet.

Personal Note: I love Nailed It!, it is such an incredibly humorous and entertaining show. Honestly, I can binge-watch this show for days–that’s how entertaining I find this reality baking TV series! Personally, what makes this show so entertaining is their main host, Nicole Byer. Byer is an American comedian who brings all the laughter and life in this series. I give this show 5 stars out of 5 because of Byer’s impressive hosting skills engages the audience and even the bakers. Also, the concept of this show is just hilarious since it’s about amateur bakers trying to recreate professional cake decorations that you see in fancy hotels. And watching them trying to recreate it can be very humorous at times.
